Processes of Message Selection and Media Influence: Social and Personal Identity, Motivations and Goals Processes
Professor Slater discusses work in the area of the Reinforcing Spirals Model integrating selective exposure and media effects approaches; his work on understanding narrative and entertainment impact including the Extended E-ELM and the more recent Temporarily Expanded Boundaries of the Self (TEBOTS) model; and work on influences of campaign interventions and messages in the media environment on health-related attitudes and behavior. Common threads include a focus on dynamic process and explanatory mechanisms, including the role of social and personal identity, implicit attitudes, and discrete emotions.
