From NAFTA to Now – A TPU Discussion

In 1776, Adam Smith published his treatise for free trade, The Wealth of Nations, and of course, the United States was born. Starting then, from Hamilton to Trump, American politicians have continually debated the benefits and detriments of open markets. Please join the Texas Political Union as we continue this debate and consider trade in the 21st Century.

We dive into trade policy as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is being renegotiated by Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. Proposed by George H.W. Bush and implemented by Bill Clinton, NAFTA has radically transformed the economy of the entire continent. We will look to NAFTA as we discuss how the American government should shape its future trade policies. Has NAFTA been beneficial to the American economy at-large? Does the damage to domestic industries and their workers require more barriers to trade such as subsidies, tariffs, and duties? What are the ethics of outsourcing? How important is the free flow of goods and people among the “Three Amigos” for the relations between these nations as well as the future of the global economy?

There will be light snacks!
