Don Winget and Mike Montgomery deliver this year's Great Lecture in Astronomy. The two will describe the university's new Center for Astrophysical Plasma Properties (CAPP).
The core principle of CAPP is to do laboratory experiments under astrophysical conditions of stars and accretion disks — making astronomy an experimental science. Experiments will study the physics of stars, black holes, and more.
Winget and Montgomery will discuss the impact of this new center, which will support multiple graduate students and postdocs, on the UT Astronomy Program.
Don Winget is the Harlan J. Smith Centennial Professor of Astronomy and a University Distinguished Teaching Professor. Mike Montgomery is a Research Scientist in the Department of Astronomy.
