John Greening on Edmund Blunden and Undertones of War

Edmund Blunden (1896-1974) was one of the First World War Poets, a group that included Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, and Robert Graves. Their influence on British culture has been incalculable. John Greening was invited by Blunden’s daughter to edit an edition of his prose-and-verse memoir, Undertones of War. In this talk he will give some of the background to both the man and his extraordinary book—which has never been out of print since 1928.

John Greening’s edition of Undertones of War was published in 2015, following his Guide to Poets of the First World War and his twelfth collection, To the War Poets. His other works include studies of other poets, a classical music anthology, and a memoir of life in Egypt. His collected essays appeared in 2018. A recipient of Cholmondeley Award for poetry, he is a reviewer for the Times Literary Supplement, and Writing Fellow at Newnham College, Cambridge.
