Lecture: "Afro-Descendents and Indigenous Rights"

Wednesday, April 2 at 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Sid Richardson Hall (SRH), Hackett Room, 1.313 2300 RED RIVER ST., Austin, Texas 78712

The Native American and Indigenous Peoples Association (NAIPA) presents a talk by Associate Professor of Government Juliet Hooker as part of their speaker series. According to Hooker, the proliferation of claims to indigeneity has led to debates about whether the category should be expanded to include some minority groups who now fall outside it, or whether a more restricted conception of indigeneity should continue to prevail. One of the questions Hooker addresses is, "If indigenous peoples are entitled to certain protections to which other minority groups are not entitled, how is this disparity justified?” Hooker is Associate Director for Public Programs at LLILAS Benson.
