Lecture by Jordan Baseman

Jordan Baseman is a visual artist and filmmaker. He received a BFA from Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and an MA from Goldsmith's College, University of London. Baseman is currently Reader in Time Based Media, Head of Sculpture at the Royal College of Art, and is also a Lecturer at The Ruskin School, University of Oxford.

Baseman has a long history of executing projects in collaboration with public institutions. These have included residencies and commissions for: Papworth Hospital (Heart and Lung Transplant Unit), Cambridge; The Science Museum, London; Dundee Contemporary Arts, Scotland; Grizedale Arts, Cumbria; Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Omaha, Nebraska; London Arts; Camden Arts Centre, London; Collective Gallery, Edinburgh; Book Works, London; National Sculpture Factory, Ireland; The Wellcome Trust, London; Monash University, Melbourne, Australia; University of Tasmania, Australia; Tokyo Wonder Site, Tokyo; The Photographers' Gallery, London; Matt's Gallery, London; and The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Baseman’s films have featured in international exhibitions and film festivals including; 53rd Venice Biennale, Los Angeles Animation Festival (where he won Best Film in the Experimental Film category), San Francisco Short Film Festival, Melbourne Underground Film Festival (where he won Best International Short Film), Tatton Park Biennial, Gstaad Film Festival, Oaxaca International Film Festival, Lone Star International Film Festival (where he won Best Short Film), Fargo International Film Festival (where he won Best Experimental Film) Kansas City International Film Festival (where he won Best Experimental Short Film) and London Short Film Festival.

Jordan Baseman has received grants from: Arts and Humanities Research Council in 2006; Wellcome Trust Arts Award in 2007, 2010 and 2011; Arts Council England Grants for the Arts Award in 2009, 2011 and 2012; the Henry Moore Foundation in 2009 and British Council in 2007. In 2003, Baseman was the Henry Moore Sculpture Fellow at the British School at Rome and in 2011 was a Visiting Fellow at St. John’s College, University of Oxford and Artist in Residence at Tokyo Wonder Site, Tokyo. In 2013, Baseman was Artist in Residence at YARAT Contemporary Art Space in Baku, Azerbaijan and in 2014 Baseman was Artist in Residence at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Omaha, Nebraska and a Visiting Fellow at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. In 2015, Baseman will be Artist in Residence at Teton Art Lab, Jackson, Wyoming and the University of Lincoln / City of Lincoln, Magna Carta 800 Artist in Residence with a grant awarded from the Leverhulme Trust.
