MALS Graduate Portfolio Plática: Esther Díaz Martín

Please join us for a special MALS Graduate Portfolio Plática featuring research presented by Esther Díaz Martín (Iberian and Latin American Languages and Cultures), entitled "Radiophonic Feminisms: The Voices and Sounds of Latina Radio Hosts, 1990-2017."

This project closely listens to the broadcasts and personal narratives of post-NAFTA and millennial Latina radio hosts across commercial AM/FM and independent podcasting. Through a critical sound studies approach to popular culture, it examines how the performance of gendered voices and sounds interrupt misogynist cultural violence both on and off the air. It argues that Latina radiophonic feminisms re-vamp the testimonio genre as a testimonio en vivo; a mutual bearing witness to injustice and call for urgent action that is direct, live, and ongoing as facilitated by the merging of radio and social media.

Portfolio presentations are given by students participating in the Graduate Portfolio Program in Mexican American and Latina/o Studies.
