Head injury in sport has made news lately, with high-profile stories about injuries in the NFL and the NCAA. Dr. Steven Kornguth, Kinesiology and Health Education, discusses his research on Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). From his work with soccer players and TBI diagnostics using imaging and biochemistry, Dr. Kornguth, and colleagues including Dr. Jeff Luci, Dr. Grady Rylander, and Dr. Kerry Oliver, is looking at changes in the brain and blood to develop a set of criteria for identifying persons whose concussions place them at increased risk for long-term brain injury. The excellent cooperation of the Athletic Department Medical team, women soccer athletes and coaches, and administrators are critical elements in the development and realization of the goals of the project.
