“The Storyteller,” a new one-act play by Nicole Oglesby, is a retelling of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. It takes place in Nazi Germany and is centered on the character of Hanna, a young woman who risks her life to save her Jewish lover.
Hanna attempts to break into a concentration camp and is caught by Nazi soldiers. As they question her, the details of her past are revealed along with several magical objects that have helped her along her journey. She is able to survive using her wit and ability to tell stories on the spot. Over the course of the play, secrets about Hanna’s past and how they interact with Nazi domination are told through flashbacks, stories and evocative stage images.
