How can you organize the digital or digitized materials that you collected in the course of your research?What are the best practices for managing such digital collections?Which digital methods would be most appropriate for your research question(s) and materials? He formerly founded and wrote The Mobilist at Medium, and before that, founded and ran the Future newsletter at Axios. He taught energy security to graduate students at Georgetown University for nine years. Previously, Steve was a foreign correspondent in the former Soviet Union, Pakistan, and the Philippines and ran a bureau for The Wall Street Journal, and before that for The New York Times, the Financial Times, and Newsweek. Steve has written three books. The latest is The Powerhouse: America, China and the Great Battery War, which was long-listed for the 2015 Financial Times-McKinsey Book of the Year prize. In 2007, Random House published The Oil and the Glory, which chronicled the struggle for fortune and power on the Caspian Sea. It was a Businessweek Top 10 book for the year. In 2008, Random House published Putin's Labyrinth, a profile of Russia through the life and death of a half-dozen Russians.

Abstract:

The U.S. can still compete in batteries. But it needs to be nuanced and exercise policy and industrial continuity: Encourage a scaleup of the chemistries and components just getting into the marketplace; meanwhile, buy and use those that China already owns like crazy in value-added products. The big winners in 200 years of industrial age history have not necessarily been the inventors of the most important technologies, but those who best shoveled those technologies into their economy.

About the UT Energy Symposium:
The UT Energy Symposium is a weekly guest lecture series that is
both free and open to the public and available for course credit.

In an effort to provide a multi-disciplinary platform for UT faculty and
students to interact on the most pressing energy issues facing our
world, the Energy Institute sponsors the UT Energy Symposium
(UTES), which will enter its 30th semester in spring 2026.

The UTES serves as a “convener” for the campus community, uniting
students interested in energy issues with faculty and others working on
sustainable energy security. Students who register for the symposium
receive one credit hour for the 15-week seminar course, which is open
to both undergraduate and graduate students.

Ongoing themes for UTES include climate change policy, innovation
and diffusion of energy technologies, low-carbon technology options
and status, and behavioral aspects of energy consumption.
Each UTES talk will be recorded and posted on this page and on
the Energy Institute YouTube channel following the event.

Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a course completion eCard, valid for two years.

Z to A Research combines a tech-forward approach to public opinion research with the service experience of legacy firms. Nancy is an American Association of Political Consultants "40 under 40" honoree, and her polling for CNBC was the most accurate public polling in the battleground states in 2020. Nancy Zdunkewicz is a pollster and founder of Z to A Research, the first 100% millennial woman-owned polling firm. Z to A Research combines a tech-forward approach to public opinion research with the service experience of legacy firms. Nancy is an American Association of Political Consultants "40 under 40" honoree, and her polling for CNBC was the most accurate public polling in the battleground states in 2020. Before launching her practice, Nancy ran the political polling team, launched a qualitative practice, and pioneered new online methodologies at polling start-up Change Research. She has also acted as the DCCC's Director of Polling & Modeling.

Rashad Robinson (D)

For more than two decades, Rashad Robinson’s strategic campaigns, media expertise and movement leadership have played a critical role in winning real change for real people.

Today, through Rashad Robinson Advisors (RRA), he advises and collaborates with foundations, nonprofits and leaders across media, politics, government and business. His aim: to increase their impact by designing effective campaigns, developing innovative media and organizing strategies, guiding strategic investments, and helping them unlock the power of communities to bring about progress.

Rashad’s new book, From Presence to Power: How to Take On the Fights That Matter—and Win, is published by One World, an imprint of Penguin Random House. It has been praised as “a master class in real activism” and “a must-read for anyone who wants to achieve lasting structural change, not just momentary victories and fleeting results.” The book offers something rare in today’s political moment: a clear, strategic roadmap for understanding how power actually works—and how to build and use it for the collective good.

Rashad’s work and insights are regularly featured across broadcast, print and social media, including CNN, MSNBC, BET, NPR, NewsOne, OWN, The New York Times, USA Today, The Washington Post, Essence, The Hollywood Reporter, and The Guardian. He has also been profiled by Fast Company, Ebony, The Root, and the Stanford Social Innovation Review.

Rashad has driven campaigns to shift portrayals in media, win public policy fights, hold corporations accountable by forcing them to change their practices, and build political power in communities that have long been excluded from it. Among those achievements, in 2020, Rashad co-led the largest advertising boycott in history: a 1,000-company boycott of Facebook and Instagram. Starting in 2015, Rashad was instrumental in launching the movement to redefine the role and work of local prosecutors, leading to dozens of subsequent reforms that measurably reduced mass incarceration and many other injustices that have been foundational to the system. Other notable victories include winning bail reform, decarceration, net neutrality, anti-discrimination practices across the tech landscape, inclusive representations across the media landscape, and the elimination of predatory Big Bank fees.

Rashad also served as co-chair of the Aspen Institute’s Commission on Information Disorder. He won a Webby Award for Best Political Podcast in 2020 and has received numerous honors from organizations across the social change sector. He has also received honorary doctorates from Georgetown University and St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

Across his work, he focuses on helping institutions understand the moment they are in—and how to engage in the type of strategic action that leads to real outcomes.

Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez was named “Hero of the New South” by Southern Living Magazine and People of the Year by Tribeza Magazine. Cristina has spent the last twenty years founding and leading some of the most creative organizations to raise wages, tackle the climate and student debt crises, and fight for immigrant rights.

Cristina is co-founder and Partner at Ascend Strategy Labs - a leading social justice consulting firm that supports mission -driven leaders and organizations achieve unprecedented impact. She is also currently a contributor at ABC News.

Cristina began her social justice career when she was a college student and co-founded Workers Defense Project (WDP), a workers’ rights organization with the mission to win better working conditions for immigrant workers in Texas. She built WDP from a small volunteer project into a statewide organization that was named “one of the most creative organizations for immigrant workers in the country” by The New York Times. She helped lead the organization for over a decade, taking on two of the most powerful special interest groups in Texas – the construction and real estate industries.

After the 2016 election, when Cristina was 6-months pregnant, she founded Jolt — a Texas-wide organization that lifts up the voice, vote, and issues impacting Latinos. Founded in 2016, Jolt seeks to win the nearly 11 million Latinos living in Texas the power and respect they deserve. Jolt’s work has reached tens of millions of Americans, mobilized thousands to action, and built the leadership of young Latinos across Texas.

Most recently, Cristina also served as President of Nextgen America, the nation’s largest youth voting rights organization.

Cristina was a 2020 U.S. Senate candidate and taught at the LBJ School of Public Policy at the University of Texas at Austin.

Skills covered in this course include Basic Life Support (BLS), use of a pocket mask, bag mask device, AED for adults, child and infant; choking relief in adults and infants; and to promptly recognize a First Aid emergency. The course teaches In Facility Provider (IFP) skills and allows instructors to observe the students, provide feedback, and guide the students’ learning throughout the course.

This course consists of two sessions. The first session, from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM, will cover Basic Life Support (BLS) training. A scheduled lunch break will take place from 12:30 PM to 1:20 PM. The second session, First Aid, will be held from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM. Participants are advised to bring a lunch and/or snacks to last through the duration of the course.

Acting auditions will consist of cold reads of a scene from the play, each lasting roughly 5-10 minutes, and character information will be provided at auditions.

Choir Auditions will consist of at most 1 minute of any song or aria acapella (no backing music), pitch matching, a range test, and sight singing.

Derek Ryan (R)

Fifteen years ago, Derek created Ryan Data & Research, a company specializing in research, voter data, and database management for candidates and campaigns. Since founding this business, Derek has helped candidates at all levels of government, from US Senate to Justice of the Peace. During the previous two primary seasons, his candidates have gone 50-12. Prior to opening his own firm, Derek was on the staff at the Republican Party of Texas (RPT) from 1999 to 2009. Initially hired as a part-time intern while in school at The University of Texas, a full-time position was created for Derek after finishing school. During his tenure at the RPT, Derek became the Research Director and his responsibilities included: opposition research, targeting, and managing the RPT’s master voter file which was used by candidates across the state.

Mykle Tomlinson (D)

Mykle is a 5th generation Texan from Grayson County in North Texas. He attended the University of Texas at Austin and graduated with government and religious studies degrees. Mykle worked on campaigns in the Austin area, managing city council and Democratic primary and general election campaigns until accepting a position at Rifeline, a community engagement and consulting firm, as their Director of Campaigns. In 2013, Mykle started Y Strategy to focus on progressive down-ballot candidates. Mykle’s passion is helping local candidates realize their full potential and work in the community to ensure that progressive candidates and organizations have a voice at the local level.

Frederick Douglass’s confrontation with Covey the slavebreaker in his Narrative of the Life and other autobiographies provides a model for daring and intelligent civic action in the American tradition. However, it is less often noticed that Douglass’s action is accompanied, in his speech above the Chesapeake, by unavoidable human questions: what kind of cosmos do we live in? What is the truth about divinity? Is the cosmos supportive of or indifferent to civic action? For this reason, Douglass’s Narrative is not simply a text of civic education but also one of liberal education. In this lecture Merrill will use the Narrative of the Life to reflect on the relationship of civic action and education to the tradition of liberal education—a timely question in light of today’s movement to revitalize civic education in America’s college and universities.

Speaker:

The Honorable Dade Phelan, Former Speaker of the Texas House (R-Beaumont)

Former Speaker Dade Phelan served as the 76th Speaker of the Texas House and is currently serving his sixth term as State Representative for District 21.

Prior to serving as Speaker, he served as Chair of the House Committee on State Affairs, as Vice-Chair of the Natural Resources Committee, as a member of the Calendars, Appropriations, and Elections Committees as well as the Select Committee on Ports, Innovation and Infrastructure.

In 2019, Speaker Phelan was named by Texas Monthly as one of the Best Legislators of the 86th legislative session. He has earned numerous additional accolades in recognition of his legislative service, including Capitol Inside's "Most Valuable Sophomore Member" in 2017 and as one of their "Most Outstanding Freshmen Legislators" in 2015. Phelan has been named Legislative Champion by the Boys and Girls Club of Texas, Legislator of the Year by the Texas Apartment Association, Guardian of Small Business by the National Federation of Independent Business, Most Valuable Legislator by the Texas Association of Community Schools, a Fighter for Free Enterprise by the Texas Association of Business and the 2019 Mental Health Champion by Mental Health America.

Phelan is the former president and two-time Governor appointee to the Lower Neches Valley Authority. His board service includes the Texas Lyceum, Southeast Texas CASA, Golden Triangle Coastal Conservation Association, The Jefferson Theater, St. Anne Catholic Church and Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas.

In addition to his duties as Speaker, Phelan works as a real estate developer at his family's fourth generation commercial real estate development firm, which owns and manages retail, industrial and office property in Texas and Arkansas.

His wife, Kim, is a solo practitioner attorney and together they have four sons, Ford, Mack, Hank and Luke. He and his family reside together in Southeast Texas, where Speaker Phelan was born and raised. He received his bachelor’s degree in Government and Business from The University of Texas at Austin.

Representative Larry D. Gonzales has dedicated his career to public service, fiscal responsibility, and effective government. Serving in the Texas House of Representatives from 2011 to 2018, Representative Gonzales became known for his leadership on budget transparency and state agency oversight. As Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Articles VI, VII, and VIII, he helped appropriate funding for 42 state agencies overseeing natural resources, business and economic development, and regulatory programs. He also served as Chairman of the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission, leading efforts to streamline government operations and improve accountability across state agencies. Before his time in the legislature, Representative Gonzales built a career in public administration and communications, working in higher education and the private sector. A proud graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, he earned his B.A. in Government and later received a Master of Public Administration and Certified Public Manager credential from Texas State University. Born and raised in Texas, Representative Gonzales has long believed in pragmatic leadership rooted in service, collaboration, and results. Today, he continues to engage in civic and leadership development efforts across the state, drawing on his deep understanding of Texas government and commitment to building effective institutions.

Course Overview: American Heart Association (AHA) Heartsaver First Aid, CPR, AED Course is an instructor-led and video-based course that teaches individuals in the community to provide FIRST AID, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automated external defibrillator (AED) use in a safe, timely, and effective manner. Dr. Miho TakamiPlease join us in welcoming Dr. Miho Takami from the University of Hyogo, Japan, for a special guest presentation on dementia care and gerontological nursing. Her visit is part of an ongoing international collaboration with Dr. Jung Kwak, supported by a Texas Global Faculty Research Seed Grant for the project, What Matters to Persons Living with Dementia: A Japan-US Cross-Cultural Comparison of Self-Agency and Relationship Quality.

About the Presentation: Drawing on decades of practice-based research, Dr. Miho Takami will explore how the lived experiences, perspectives, and voices of people living with dementia can inform more person-centered approaches to care. She will discuss lessons from dementia care practice and research in Japan and highlight strategies for developing compassionate, responsive systems that support the well-being of individuals living with dementia and their families.

About the Speaker: Dr. Miho Takami is a faculty member at the University of Hyogo and a recognized leader in dementia care and gerontological nursing in Japan. For more than 25 years, she has conducted research on activity-based interventions, family-centered and mutual-care approaches, and community-based dementia care models. Working closely with Certified Nurse Specialists and clinical partners throughout Japan, she has helped advance evidence-informed, stage-based approaches to dementia care. Her current research examines how people living with dementia perceive their lives, relationships, and care needs, with the goal of strengthening person-centered dementia care practices and policies.

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in partnership with the Texas Child Mental Health Clinical Programs and the Autism Consortium of Texas present Navigating New Pathways for Autism research with speaker Helen Tager-Flusberg, Ph.D.

Helen Tager-Flusberg received her bachelor of science in psychology from University College London and her doctorate in experimental psychology from Harvard University. Since 2001, she has been at Boston University, where she is now Professor Emerita in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences and Director of the Center for Autism Research Excellence.

Tager-Flusberg has devoted her career to conducting research on autism and related neurodevelopmental disorders, exploring phenotypic variability within and across disorders; investigating developmental and intervention-based changes in language and social cognition using behavioral and brain imaging methodologies; and developing new measures to assess language.

About the UTNY Program

UT in New York is a pre-professional program offered fall, spring, and summer that provides UT Austin students of all majors the chance to live, work and learn in one of the most dynamic metropolitan cities in the world. Students take in-person UT Austin classes at our UTNY Center in Manhattan, complete an independent study or internship in the industry of their choice, and immerse themselves in the city’s opportunities all while expanding their professional network.

Come audition for acting or choir for the Madrigal Dinner and be a part of one of UT's longest-running traditions.

Acting auditions will consist of cold reads of a scene from the play, each lasting roughly 5-10 minutes, and character information will be provided at auditions.

Choir Auditions will consist of at most 1 minute of any song or aria acapella (no backing music), pitch matching, a range test, and sight singing.

Want to do Tech, the sign-up to join the Tech crew for this production will be available at auditions.

For years Cactus Lee has quietly made records at a relentless pace, plugging along and playing out at local honky tonks in and around his hometown of Austin, Texas.What began as a home recording project for songwriter Kevin Dehan in 2019 quickly became a group with rotating members and pick-up bands along the way. The project has played New York and Los Angeles multiple times, as well as a Chicago residency as part of the Cosmic Country showcase.

The new album, Lee’s Dream will be released on vinyl February 21 with a special album release show in London, UK at The Lexington. A digital and retail release will follow on April 10, 2026.The album, his second for Western Vinyl, was conceived while on a monthlong solo tour. He stopped at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, where he saw a replica of Guy Clark’s basement room.“This was the place where he smoked cigarettes, repaired guitars, and recorded songs. There’s a wall of cassettes on one side and on the other a guitar hangs with a piece of paper taped on that says ‘EASY MONEY.’ That stuck out to me as I continued on my travels and became the first song I wrote for this record.”The shows on that tour saw Dehan playing to new faces every night in small cities in the Midwest and the South, writing songs in the van en route to the next one. “When I got back things in my home life with my family started to get turbulent. It caused me to seriously question whether or not I should be out on the road as much.”“I took a little time off. I was able to write, which helped me cope with some serious life events. Music is very important to me, but my family will always come first. My wife and daughter.”Dehan tookthose songs to Billy Horton’s Fort Horton Studios in Wyldwood, Texas to record. Similar to his work with Charley Crockett and Theo Lawrence, Horton pushed Dehan toward classic country songs and production choices.

“Billy has been making classic records out at his studio for a long time,” shares Dehan. “I went in and he started giving me lists of artists who either I reminded him of or who he thought I should push toward in the process of making this album. John D. Loudermilk, George Hamilton IV, Glen Campbell and early Gordon Lightfoot were artists that Billy put on a playlist for me to listen to.”Horton’s nostalgic taste leans heavily on the Sun Records era of recording. He pushed Dehan to think as a solo artist bringing songs into the studio for a band to pick up and flesh out, a thought not wholly unfamiliar to his home recording roots. Dehan took those initial recording sessions with Horton home to put the finishing touches on, with bass and piano being recorded by Jack Montesinos and Joe Roddy from the Point, and Lindsey Verrill of Little Mazarn lending flute and cello. The album feels communal, lived-in, joyous, and melancholy.

A lifelong Texan, Dehan writes about the Armadillo World Headquarters, Lone Star beer, and Valentine, Texas. He sings of easy money, bad luck, and seeing spots. A historian as much a songwriter, Dehan pulls from music and country folklore to illuminate archetypes in his writing, often crafting melodic fever dreams that feel instantly familiar. Visually he takes it even further. His last record licensed an image from the great R. Crumb, with this album’s artwork adapted directly from Roger Miller’s 1964 debut album Roger and Out, even adapting the liner notes to read:“Cactus Lee is a recording artist through and through. He has written some of the finest tunes in the Country & Western field, and some of the ‘farthest out’ songs in all fields. He is a stickler for originality. Seldom, if ever, will he co-write. He doesn’t need to, as any listener to this album will hear.The idea must be Lee’s own idea—the dream must be LEE’S DREAM!”

In this workshop, you'll learn how to use the Unix command line to process born digital media more efficiently. The Unix command line is a powerful tool for automating repetitive tasks and can be accessed through Linux and Mac operating systems, or through Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). You'll work with born digital materials, including files created and managed digitally as well as storage media such as hard drives, optical discs, and removable storage devices. The workshop will cover basic commands for virus scanning, copying, deduplicating, and converting files. Join us to learn practical techniques for preserving your born digital files for long-term access and sustainability!

• Does civility limit the substance of what we can say to others, or only the manner in which we say it?
• Should universities, employers, or social media companies require people to communicate civilly in their own domains, and if so, what should those rules look

Workshop Leader:

Dr. Marie Newhouse, Senior Fellow, Civitas Institute and an associate professor in law, philosophy, and public policy at the University of Surrey.

Marie Newhouse is a senior fellow at the Civitas Institute and an associate professor in law, philosophy, and public policy at the University of Surrey. A legal and political philosopher, Newhouse has written about the nature of legal wrongdoing, prerequisites for legal obligation, and the limits of state authority. She also writes about institutional ethics and is currently working on a new project about civil discourse in universities. Newhouse holds a JD from the University of Washington and a PhD in public policy from Harvard University. Prior to her academic career, she worked as a legal and policy analyst at the Cato Institute and as a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Studies.

Since 1979, the Cactus Cafe has been one of the great American listening rooms — a small stage where the room leans in and the music does the talking. But that doesn't mean anyone's sitting still: it's the kind of room where you can tap your feet or let loose right along with the band. That mix of close-up listening and pure fun is exactly what Hot Club of Cowtown brings to a stage: their vintage sound, part Bob Wills swing and part Django Reinhardt gypsy jazz, was made for a night like this one.

Since forming in 1997, Austin-based trio Hot Club of Cowtown — fiddler Elana James, guitarist Whit Smith, and their signature slapping upright bass — have served as the world's premier ambassadors of Western swing, earning induction into both the International Western Music Association's Hall of Fame and the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame. This fall they return home fresh off a two-night stand at New York's famed Birdland Jazz Club and a summer of major Django Reinhardt festival stages, still touring the crossroads where country meets jazz.

Whether you're there for the fiddle-and-guitar fireworks of a Tchavolo Swing or ready to Stay All Night, this crowd won't want the night to end.

On September 20, Landmarks welcomes indie singer-songwriter Elijah Delgado to Songs in the Skyspace. Known for emotionally captivating live performances, Delgado crafts what he calls “indie rock lullabies” — a textured blend of indie rock, indie folk, and pop that pairs atmospheric guitars, intimate songwriting, and dynamic builds with warm vocals and emotional honesty. One of Austin’s most promising new voices, Delgado has performed at the Old Settler’s Music Festival and UtopiaFest, and will play the Austin City Limits festival this fall.

Speaker:

Vincent Harris (R)

Vincent Harris is CEO of Harris Media and has worked on numerous U.S. Presidential-level campaigns. Harris ran the digital operations for the pro-Trump “Right for America” SuperPAC that was among the largest spenders on Google and Meta in the 2024 Presidential cycle. Previously, Vincent ran digital operations for Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez (SuperPAC), Texas Governor Rick Perry, Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, and Speaker Newt Gingrich’s Presidential campaigns.

Vincent has also worked on head of state races across the world, including races in France, Spain, Albania, and Israel. Harris is proud of his work with Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party and spent extensive time in Israel in both the 2015 and 2022 successful election cycles for the Prime Minister. Harris Media and Vincent’s work internationally is unmatched in the political space.

Vincent spent over three years working with Ted Cruz, whom many have credited his successful use of the web as part of his incredible underdog win. Under Vincent’s watch, the nationally acclaimed firm, Harris Media, has grown into a successful company with offices in Texas, Florida, and New England. Vincent is a strong believer in the power of the internet as a tool to influence the public arena, and his firm’s successes have been noted in numerous publications and news outlets. He was named the youngest “Rising Star” in Politics by Campaigns & Elections Magazine and was recently profiled in Bloomberg, where he was dubbed “The Man Who Invented the Republican Internet.” Vincent has appeared on numerous television channels including CNBC and the John Stossel show to discuss digital media trends.

Biography

Dr. Donald C. Winter is an independent consultant supporting national and international security interests in the US and allied nations. He served as the 74th Secretary of the Navy from January 2006 to March 2009. As Secretary of the Navy, he led America’s Navy and Marine Corps Team and was responsible for an annual budget of over $125 billion and almost 900,000 people. Dr. Winter’s prior business career in the aerospace and defense industry spanned over 30 years as a systems engineer, program manager and corporate executive.

From 2009 to 2020, he was a Professor of Practice at the University of Michigan where he taught graduate level courses on systems engineering, satellite design, and maritime policy. He was reappointed to this role in 2024. Since 2011 he has served in multiple roles assisting the Commonwealth of Australia in their efforts to reconstruct the Royal Australian Navy’s fleet and establish a sustainable shipbuilding capability. During 2019 to 2021 he also served as the US DoD’s Senior Defense Industry Advisor for Ukraine. Dr. Winter was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE) in 2002 and served as its chair from 2020 to 2024.

This year’s lecture, “Life of the Party in Xi Jinping’s China,” will be delivered by Dr. Timothy Cheek.

Dr. Timothy Cheek is Professor and Louis Cha Chair in Chinese Research at the Institute of Asian Research in the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs and Department of History at the University of British Columbia. His research, teaching, and translation focus on the recent history of China, particularly the role of Chinese intellectuals in the twentieth century and the history of the Chinese Communist Party.

His recent publications include The Intellectual in Modern Chinese History (2015); The Chinese Communist Party: A Century in Ten Lives (Cambridge University Press, 2021), co-authored with Hans van de Ven and Klaus Mühlhahn; and Logics of a Great State: Chinese Statecraft from Early Ming to Xi Jinping, edited with Bruce Rusk and Shoufu Yin (Vancouver: UBC Press, forthcoming 2027).

UT in New York is a pre-professional program offered fall, spring, and summer that provides UT Austin students of all majors the chance to live, work and learn in one of the most dynamic metropolitan cities in the world. State Senator Molly Cook (D)

Molly Cook is a sixth-generation Texan, born and raised in the Houston area. She is a registered nurse and grassroots organizer. She earned her nursing degree from the University of Texas at Austin and her dual nursing and public health graduate degree from Johns Hopkins University. As an emergency room nurse and grassroots organizer, Molly advocated for the health and safety of her neighbors, and she is honored to continue that work from the Texas Senate. Molly’s community advocacy helped pass a citizen-driven amendment to the City of Houston charter, and she has been recognized by the Houston Chronicle as one of Houston’s transportation leaders. Molly is a harpist, multi-modal transportation enthusiast, and certified yoga instructor. She is the proud custodian of her senior rescue chihuahua, Oso.

Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez (D)

A speaker series hosted by Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez, ABC news contributor and founder of some of Texas' leading civil rights organizations including Workers Defense Project and Jolt. Cristina is also a former U.S. Senate Candidate and led NextGen America, the nation's largest youth voter mobilization organization.. Named a "Hero of the New South" by Southern Living, Cristina has spent more than two decades building organizations that expand civic participation, strengthen communities, and develop emerging leaders. The series explores how collective action can drive meaningful social and political change.

Betty Anderson

The Betty Anderson Speaker Series is named in honor of Betty Anderson. Betty’s son Art is a graduate of the joint LBJ School and UT School of Law program and son Dale received his M.D. from U.T. Southwestern Medical School.

From the 1960’s to the 1990’s Betty was on the forefront of social justice issues impacting children, lower income and women’s rights from the grassroots level to leading state agencies and national nonprofits. Few Texans have made such significant contributions to the health and well-being of the State’s residents. We all see things that we would like to change, but when Betty identified a need for change, she did something about it. She created organizations, served on boards, wrote letters to the editor, and visited with elected officials frequently. The grace with which she debated issues allowed her to share her perspectives with officials who, regardless of their views on the subject, welcomed her well-researched and well-presented input. At the local, state and national levels, Betty trained boards and conducted public policy workshops and lobbying training programs. She served on governmental advisory committees for maternal and child health, day care, reproductive freedom of choice, equity in education, sexual harassment, peace, aging and disabilities. She spearheaded coalitions to put the basic health and human needs of people first in legislative budgets. Betty's work with public groups helped create a political climate for reform measures such as property tax reform, removing the specific dollar amount for welfare spending from the state constitution, child care legislation, indigent health care reform and education reform.

Her father Henry Price was a Methodist minister and mother Irene was a math teacher. In accordance with Methodist Church tradition, Rev. Price moved to a new church appointment throughout Central Texas every few years. Betty attended at least eight different elementary and high schools. Constantly moving to a new town and school made her adaptable to change and helped her to form friendships quickly. Her parents also instilled a sense of duty to serve others. At the age of 40, Rev. Price volunteered to serve overseas in World War II as a chaplain. Betty received her B.S. at the University of North Texas (then NTSU) in 1954. There she was highly influenced by the chaplain and staff at the college’s Wesley Foundation who were focused on social justice issues. Following graduation, she taught at Arlington High School where she met John Anderson who was a professor at Arlington State (now UTA). She married John the night before he was shipped overseas to serve in the U.S. army in Germany. They later moved to Lubbock where John was named a professor of biochemistry at Texas Tech University. After moving to Lubbock, Betty quickly got involved with a support group of smart, energetic, socially compassionate women, many of whom were either on faculty or spouses of Tech faculty members. She willingly joined and started working in a number of civic and charitable organizations, and her support group honed her organizational and oratory skills.

One of her loves was the League of Women Voters where she served as the local and state president, as well as on numerous national committees. She received the 2003 League State President's Award and the National League's Voters Education Fund Leaders Award. Another passion was the American Association of University Women where she served as the local and state president and on the national board. She was named an AAUW Woman of Distinction, and the Lubbock branch was renamed in her honor. Recognizing the social and economic disparities in Texas and nationally Betty's energies in the 1960's and 1970's focused on improving the lives of all women. She was outspoken in her support of equal rights, not a particularly popular position in West Texas. In the late 1960's and early 1970's passage of an equal rights amendment (ERA) provided a rallying point in the years after attaining woman's suffrage. Betty joined Texas pioneers such as Hermine D. Tobolowsky, Sissy Farenthold, Ann Richards and Barbara Jordan in obtaining overwhelming support of the Texas Equal Rights Amendment to the Texas Constitution. Texas also voted to approve the national ERA to the U.S. Constitution but it failed to obtain the approval of the necessary 38 states to ratify.

In 1973 Betty went back to college for her master's degree. The subject of her master's thesis was on a woman's right to an abortion. Texas Tech named her a distinguished alumnus in 1986. She helped found and also served on the boards of the Rape Crisis Center and South Plains Aids Resource Center. In 1989 she helped lead a group of Texas religious leaders at the March for Women's Equality and Women's Lives in Washington, D.C. The marchers were protesting the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Webster v. Reproductive Rightswhich rolled back the Roe v. Wade abortion protections for women. At the time, it was the largest march on D.C. since Martin Luther King's 1968 "I have a dream" speech. In the 1980s, as chair of the Governor's Commission for Women, Betty was instrumental in developing a legislative women and children's agenda for the Texas Legislature with the feminization of poverty, women's economic justice and pay equity as issues of great concern.

In the 1990s, she chaired the Texas Maternal and Child Health Advisory Committee and was a member of the Texas Commission on Children and Youth. At the national level, she organized AAUW visits to every Texas congressional office for the passage of the Family and Medical Leave Act. Betty's interest in health care was sparked by the League of Women Voters of Texas Education Fund and the Texas Department of Human Services Foundation National Health Care Debates in 1986, for which she served as a moderator. From 1988-92, she chaired the national Health and Welfare Committee of the United Methodist Church. For the following two years, she lobbied on health care issues in Washington, DC. Betty served on numerous local and state committees and personally assisted the homeless, aged, disabled and children. Her state governmental appointments included the Texas Commission on Children and Youth, the Texas Urban Planning Commission Health Committee, the Texas Department of Human Services Aged and Disabled Committee which she chaired and the Adult and Protective Services Advisory Committee. She helped to create and was a board member of the Texas Center for Public Policy Priorities (now Every Texan) in 1994. Betty's local governmental activities include the South Plains Regional Workforce Development Board, Airport Zoning Board, South Plains Area Agency In Agency Advisory Council, Urban Renewal Board, Community Development Block Grant Advisory Committee, Planning and Zoning Commission, Lubbock Independent Bond Steering Committee, LISD Smooth Transition Committee for Degradation, Lubbock Area Children's Legislative Agenda, Children's Advocacy Center, Lubbock Interfaith Hospitality Network for Homeless Families and more than 50 other West Texas agencies and nonprofits. In 1983 she helped to found the South Plains Food Bank which started in a 5,000 square foot warehouse with 28 agencies. It grew to partner with 170 agencies serving more than 9 million meals per year.

In the 1990's SFFB developed the Breedlove Dehydration Plant, providing food for humanitarian agencies around the world. John Anderson applied his biochemistry knowledge to help operate the plant in its early years. The 1996 federal budget passed by Congress contained $24 billion for health insurance for children in low-income families. Texas had 14% of the nation's uninsured children ("CHIP"). Under the program Texas would receive 75 cents from the federal government for every 25 cents allocated by the state. In 1997 Betty was the West Texas liaison for Texans Care for Children which was formed to persuade state law makers to fully fund programs for needy children. She helped 15 agencies in lobbying Texas legislators and wrote letters to the editor to encourage public support: "By ensuring Texas kids today, we can build a better tomorrow. Be a voice for children: It's time for all of us who care about children to stand up and be counted." Texas reached full enrollment of 428,000 kids within one year. Betty became a board member of the Texas Committee for the Humanities and Public Policy (now Humanities Texas) and served as chair in 1981. Under her leadership TCH established a task force on the humanities in public schools which issued a report that resulted in enhanced elementary and secondary education and recognized outstanding teaching in the humanities. She led the effort to approve a large grant to the Texas Foundation in Women's Resources which resulted in a collaborative effort to launch a major touring exhibit on Texas women's history.

At the international level, Betty received the International Venture Club's Mae Carvel Award for Women Helping Women in 1998 in Toronto. She was a delegate to the International Women's Year Conference in 1977. Betty was a moderator at the Conference on the International Women's Decade and Beyond in New York. In addition she helped lead seminars at United Nations and Women and World Development Seminars from 1986-90. Betty served her faith as a member of St. John's Methodist Church in Lubbock where she was an elected delegate to Annual and General Conferences and served on the Board of Church and Society and the National Health and Welfare Committee of the United Methodist Church. In 1993, Betty received the SMU Perkins' School of Theology Woodrow B. Seals Laity Award for Service to Church and Society. In 1998 she served on a national committee of the Methodist Church concerned about the lack of inclusivity language in the hymnal and other church material. In October 1981 the 9.6 million member Methodist Church looked for ten persons to serve on a committee to promote language as both male and female. Betty stated that "it's important to look at the language of God because it does affect the way we view the image of God". Her efforts resulted in the adoption of a hymnal that was more sensitive to the concerns of women, minorities and the disabled. Betty had many interests besides activism – politics, education, government, and the arts, for instance. She and John travelled around the world and frequently went on trips with Lubbock friends.

Annually they would go to Santa Fe during the summer opera season. One story illustrated the way she adapted her musical interest to West Texas. When she and John moved to Lubbock she accepted engagements to perform on the harp, which she played beautifully, and the Andersons bought a pickup to accommodate the harp. Pickups were common in West Texas but John and Betty's vehicle was the only one with a harp in the back. Betty's main challenge was turning down new opportunities to help the underrepresented in our society. At one point in time she was asked to be on the board of a national organization. After writing down the names of all of the organizations she was actively involved her list exceeded 35 different groups. Even Betty had to say "No" sometimes. If there were a way to clone Betty Anderson the world would be a much better place. Following her death in 1998, the Texas House of Representatives passed a lengthy commemorative resolution in Betty's honor. It concluded with the following statement: "Though it is impossible to gauge the full effect of a person's life, some individuals leave their unmistakable mark on the world as they move through it, and Betty Price Anderson's legacy of compassion, vision, and commitment to her fellow Texans will be cherished for years to come." Truer words were never written.

$65 – UT Student & UT Non-Nursing Faculty & Staff$80 – Non-UT ParticipantsCourse Overview: AHA BLS Provider and Heartsaver First Aid (Dual Certificates) is an AHA BLS Instructor-led course that teaches students critical skills needed to respond to and manage a life-threatening emergency. Skills covered in this course include Basic Life Support (BLS), use of a pocket mask, bag mask device, AED for adults, child and infant; choking relief in adults and infants; and to promptly recognize a First Aid emergency. The course teaches In Facility Provider (IFP) skills and allows instructors to observe the students, provide feedback, and guide the students’ learning throughout the course.

This course consists of two sessions. The first session, from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM, will cover Basic Life Support (BLS) training. A scheduled lunch break will take place from 12:30 PM to 1:20 PM. The second session, First Aid, will be held from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM. Participants are advised to bring a lunch and/or snacks to last through the duration of the course.

Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a course completion eCard, valid for two years.

Throughout it all, fans have hungered for the ferocious blues stylist to dig into some Texas blues with his own unmistakable magic. For his 15th album, his first since 2014, he does just that: The Austin, Texas blues guitar slinger teems up with Texas Sugar Strat Magik producer-guitarist Dennis Herring for the first time in 22 years. The resulting album, the gritty and sexy Ain’t Giving Up, out September 2022 on Mascot Records, isn’t a calculated return to roots affair, though. Recorded live on the studio floor with vintage gear and with minimal overdubs, this is a raw and revved-up showcase for the blues virtuoso’s jaw-dropping chops; his mastery of the elusive Texas shuffle; and his deep love and commitment to the blues.

Chris Duarte was inducted into Canada Blues Hall of Fame in 2016.
