Join The University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) in Port Aransas, Texas, on Friday, October 2, for the Island Science Day Reception, a special evening kicking off Island Science Day weekend and celebrating 85 years of marine science at UTMSI and 20 years of the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve. The reception will take place from 5:30–7 p.m. and is geared toward adults, offering an opportunity to connect with researchers, community members, supporters, and friends of UTMSI in a relaxed setting. Guests can enjoy light refreshments while supplies last.

The evening will feature a special presentation, “From Vision to Discovery: The Story of UTMSI and What Lies Ahead,” highlighting the Institute’s history, scientific contributions, and vision for the future. Guests will also have the opportunity to participate in an interactive activity and connect with the people helping shape the future of coastal research and stewardship.

The Island Science Day Reception is free and open to the public and takes place in Port Aransas, Texas. Make a weekend of it and stay for Island Science Day on Saturday, October 3, from 10 a.m.–2 p.m., a free, family-friendly celebration of science and the coastal environment. We hope you’ll make the trip to the coast for an evening of conversation, celebration, and connection as we kick off Island Science Day weekend.

Join The University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) in Port Aransas, Texas, on Saturday, October 3, for Island Science Day, a free, family-friendly celebration of science, discovery, and the Texas coast. The event takes place from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at the UT Marine Science Institute, offering visitors of all ages the opportunity to explore interactive exhibits, meet scientists and students, tour research facilities, and discover the groundbreaking marine science happening along the Texas coast.

This year’s celebration marks 85 years of marine science at UTMSI and 20 years of the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve, highlighting the important research, education, stewardship, and community partnerships that have helped shape our understanding and protection of Texas coastal ecosystems.

Throughout the day, guests can participate in hands-on demonstrations, explore come-and-go activities, visit vendor and outreach booths, enjoy food and refreshments, and take self-guided tours of the Wetlands Education Center and Water Wise Wildlife Garden. Special boat excursions aboard the R/V Katy and Curt Johnson will also offer a closer look at local estuaries, seagrass habitats, and marine life.

Island Science Day is free and open to visitors of all ages, and no registration is required to attend. Registration is required for demonstrations and boat excursions, however, and space is limited. In-person registration will take place at the Patton Center Auditorium at 855 E. Cotter Ave. in Port Aransas beginning at 9:30 a.m. for demonstrations. Boat excursion registration opens one hour before each scheduled departure and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Join us for dinner and a conversation around critical minerals with author Ernest Scheyder and GSLI Associate Director John Schwartz! Ernest is the author of "The War Below: Lithium, Copper, and the Global Battle to Power Our Lives." They will discuss global supply chains, the United States’ role in critical minerals globally, and the political, environmental, and economic questions surrounding mining and processing. This event is cohosted by The Edward A. Clark Center for Australian and New Zealand Studies and Global Sustainability Leadership Institute.

Our events are an opportunity to bring the community together for important discussions. While thoughtful discourse is encouraged, please respect the space, speakers, and co-attendees. Events are recorded and photographed.
