Literacy First is a high quality, comprehensive, research-based, English and Spanish literacy tutoring program that supports students in the Austin community. Our mission is to provide low-income schools with highly trained AmeriCorps tutors to ensure that children advance to grade level in reading before third grade. Literacy First members tutor K-2nd grade students one-on-one daily.

We have Full-time, Three Quarter-time, and Part-time positions available. Members tutor in their assigned school 30-40 hours a week, Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Members attend team meetings on campus, compile student data, and share this information with school teachers and administrators. Full-time members also serve an additional 5 hours per week with a community partnership by serving with a local nonprofit. Community partnerships allow members to develop relationships and skills while connecting to the greater Austin community. Service with Literacy First requires a strong work ethic, flexibility, and the commitment to being an advocate for children by becoming an early literacy expert. No prior teaching experience is required. Literacy First supports tutors with comprehensive training, weekly on-site coaching, and bilingual support if needed.

Members interested in a career in education are also given the option to serve a second year with Literacy First and pursue alternative teaching certification through Literacy First’s partnership with Region 13. Region 13 waives the application and registration fee for second-year members along with additional incentives and grants for Bilingual members.
