Examine key sociological issues related to sport, identity, and society while visiting sporting and cultural venues across England!

  • Attend professional rugby and cricket matches
  • Visit the 2012 Olympic Park in London
  • Tour Manchester United and the National Cycling Center
  • Learn to play cricket

Course description: Sport occupies a significant place within English society. From the centrality of cricket in helping to shape the British empire, to the importance of soccer ("football") in promoting the varied national identities within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, to the ways in which women and racial minorities have used sport to achieve social mobility and recognition, sport remains one of the most important ways to understand the changing nature of English society in the 21st century. In this program, student participants will examine English identity through sports and leisure activities of the English with a focus on questions related to class, race, gender and region.
