https://www.galleriesatut.org/event-details/artist-talk-film-screening-with-melvin-edwardsIn conjunction with the exhibition Melvin Edwards: WIRE(D) AND CHAIN(ED) currently on view at Christian-Green Gallery, the Art Galleries at Black Studies proudly presents an evening conversation with artist Melvin Edwards, filmmaker Lydie Diakhaté, and curator Phillip Townsend.
The event features a special screening of Diakhaté's documentary film Some Bright Morning: The Art of Melvin Edwards, which tells the global story of this renowned artist.
Born in the segregated South in the 1930s, Edwards has created innovative, abstract welded-steel sculptures since the early 1960s. His work often incorporates found objects and has frequently addressed social issues and racial violence. Following the artist from his New York gallery to both Ghana and Senegal, Some Bright Morning places Edwards' life and work in an international context. The film explores his powerful connections with Africa and how pan-Africanism and black internationalism inform his work. In extensive interviews, the artist discusses the cultural and political values that have enabled him to establish his artistic language over the past six decades.
After the screening, we'll have a panel discussion with artist Melvin Edwards, curator Phillip Townsend, and director Lydie Diakhaté. This event is free and open to the public. Preferred Parking is in the Trinity Garage located at 1815 Trinity St, Austin, TX 78712.
