About this Event
The ASK Intercultural Competence Certificate is a unique opportunity from the Student Learning and Development area within University Housing & Dining. Residents can enhance their personal and professional capabilities through a series of guided events, activities, discussion groups, and cultural engagement on campus and in the wider Austin community. In order to receive the certificate, residents will be required to attend 4 events in each category (4 Attitudes, 4 Skills, 4 Knowledge) for a total of 12 events over the course of the year. The competencies aim to hone qualities of civic and global cognizance in order to create empathetic and civically engaged citizens, as outlined below.
Attitudes: Each resident will develop respect, openness, curiosity and discovery in relation to their own culture and the culture of others in their community.
Skills: Each resident will improve their skills in listening, observing, evaluating, analyzing, interpreting, relating and critical thinking through interacting with other cultures and their own.
Knowledge: Residents will improve their cultural self-awareness, culture-specific Knowledge and sociolinguistic awareness.
At the end of the year, residents will create a short creative representation of their learning (using a medium they’re comfortable with) and how what they learned connects to the components of the ASK program. Student creations will be displayed at the ASK Certificate Ceremony at the end of the year.
