Butler Opera Center: The Women, The Telephone & Trouble in Tahiti

The Butler Opera Center presents a winter trio of one-act operas: The Women (Pasatieri), The Telephone (Menotti) and Trouble in Tahiti (Bernstein). In The Women we find a Freudian purgatory: A trio of voices blend and spar as a man's wife and mother fight over who is most deserving of his love. There's more than one ring at play in The Telephone, a sweet, comedic opera that challenges protagonist Ben to propose to his girlfriend Lucy in between all her interminable phone calls. Will he get a word in edgewise before his train leaves the station? The domestic unhappiness of young, suburban couple Sam and Dinah is at the center of Trouble in Tahiti—a sly commentary on consumerism's battle with love.
