Depositing the Records of the Arce v. Douglas Case at the Mexican American Library Program, the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection

Friday, January 25, 2019, from 6:00-8:00 PM

The commemorative event celebrates the decision by plaintiffs—teachers and students—in Arce v. Douglas to deposit the entire court case archive at the University of Texas at Austin. It takes place on Friday, January 25, 2019, in the reference area of the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection located in Sid Richardson Hall at 2300 Red River Street, Austin, Texas. Arce v. Douglas is a historic, precedent-setting court case that challenged the decision by the Tucson Unified School District to dismantle the Mexican American Studies program at the behest of the state Superintendent of Instruction. The 2017 victory involved a hard-fought and lengthy battle with enormous, positive implications for Mexican American Studies and Ethnic Studies.

The event features Richard Martínez, the lead attorney for the case who will speak on the significance of this legal victory, with Dr. Angela Valenzuela, Professor in the Educational Leadership & Policy Department, acting as Mistress of Ceremonies. Daniel Arbino, U.S. Latina/o Studies Librarian at the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection, will also speak on the importance of this gift to the university.  Dr. Leonard Moore, Vice President of the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement will offer words of welcome.
