DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that renowned Tuvan throat singing e
nsemble Alash will again be joining the Center for Russian\, East European
and Eurasian Studies for a concert this Spring!\n\nThe concert will be FR
EE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC at the Scottish Rite Theater\, located at 207 W
18th St\, Austin\, TX 78701 (directions to the theater and parking informa
tion can be found at http://scottishritetheater.org/about/parking).\n\nAla
sh performs traditional music from the Republic of Tuva\, located in south
ern Siberia bordering Mongolia\, using throat singing and Tuvan folk instr
uments\, all subtly infused with Western influences. Its members formed th
eir first group\, Changy-Xaya\, as students at the Kyzyl Arts College in K
yzyl\, the capital city of the Republic of Tuva\, and first toured in the
United States in 2006. The group's members include Bady-Dorzhu Ondar (voca
 ls\, igil\, doshpuluur\, and guitar)\, Ayan-ool Sam (vocals\, igil\, doshp
 uluur\, and guitar)\, and Ayan Shirizhik (vocals\, kengirge\, shynggyrash\
, shoor\, murgu\, and xomus).\n\nThe trio of master throat singers has tou
red the US annually since 2006\, playing with Béla Fleck & the Flecktones
(who were on tour to promote their CD "Jingle All the Way\," which featur
es Alash on several tracks)\, at SXSW\, at UT several times\, and on air a
t public radio stations across the U.S. (A more complete list can be seen
 on their website:http://www.alashensemble.com/media.htm#News)\n\nUnder the
ir first artistic director\, the late master throat singer Kongar-ool Onda
r (who was prominently featured in the Oscar-nominated documentary "Genghi
s Blues\," and who played on David Letterman)\, the group began to forge a
new musical identity - introducing guitar and sometimes even the Russian
bayan (accordion) into their arrangements\, alongside their traditional Tu
van instruments.\n\nAlash and its members have been the recipients of nume
rous awards\, including first prize in Tuva's International Xöömei Sympo
sium competition (2004)\, People's Xöömeizhi of the Republic of Tuva (Ba
 dy-Dorzhu Ondar\, 2007)\, and Merited Artist of Tuva (Ayan Shirizhik\, 200
9). More information on Alash can be found at their website and on their F
