She received her Ph.D. from the University of Georgia in Language Education. Her research examines (in)equities and (in)justices in early childhood teaching and teacher education and uses research methods that center the lives and experiences of people of color.
Increasingly, university-based teacher educators seek to address the deep-rooted and pervasive racial inequities in teacher education. This lecture will explore the ways we can disrupt the status quo in teacher education. Dr. Souto-Manning will share findings from a three-year collaborative research project centering teachers and communities of color. First, she will detail the varied ways students, families, and communities of color are (de)valued by teacher education programs. Second, she will demonstrate how reorganizing physical spaces, learning environments, and pedagogies are critical for addressing issues of race, power, and inequities in teacher education. Teacher educators and experienced teachers transformed traditional teacher education programs to be more equitable by valuing collaboration, intellectual interdependence, and shared expertise.
