ED Talks Speaker Series

Dr. Nelson Flores is associate professor of Educational Linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. His talk is entitled, The Specter of Semilingualism: The Production of Raciolinguistic Categories within Standards-Based Reform. In this talk, Dr. Flores will explore a raciolinguistic category imposed on Latinx students is semilingualism, which suggests students have failed to fully master English or Spanish. In this talk, Dr. Flores will will provide a historical perspective on semilingualism from the Bilingual Education Act to contemporary standards-based reform, drawing on case studies of three students in a dual language school in a segregated, primarily Latinx community.
