DESCRIPTION:Lan Tuazon: In the Land of Real Shadows\n\nFall 2018 Vaulted Ga
 llery Artist-in-Residence\n\nSeptember 21 – December 7\, 2018\n\n \n\nTh
is exhibition is the final part of Lan Tuazon’s decade-long trilogy on t
he order of things: architecture\, artifacts\, and now\, anthropogenic mat
ter. Her projects push the limited and bounded frame of orders so as to re
concile exclusions. Her earliest work in this trilogy\, architecture\, foc
used on urban class divisions\; the second phase\, artifacts\, considered
the status of objects in cultural customs and practices. With this exhibit
ion\, Tuazon has arrived at a consideration of the planet as a container t
hat houses both nature and culture.\n\nIn the Land of Real Shadows is a pr
oject about the lifespan of things beyond obsolescence. The exhibition dra
ws attention to the vast footprint of our consumer culture and examines ho
w ecological conditions\, when met with human actions\, transform natural
selection into artificial selection. Common items and commodities are accu
mulated\, dissected\, and layered to give mass and make seen the unseen by
product of human consumption. Tuazon uses assemblage and the additive proc
ess to compress and collapse space through a method she calls “documenta
ry sculpture\,” in which objects are records and indices of our natural
and cultural time. Through the artificial fossilization of objects\, natur
al processes are imposed onto manmade products to make visible the effects
of geological time and the finitude of human culture.\n\nThis exhibition
is organized by Amy Hauft\, 2017-2018 Acting Director of the Visual Arts C
 enter.\n\n \n\nASSOCIATED PROGRAMS\n\nFall 2018 Season Opening Reception /
 / Sept. 21\, 6–8 PM\n\nAustin Museum Day // Sept. 23\, 12–3 PM\n\nFami
 ly Day // Oct. 20\, 12–3 PM\n\n \n\nABOUT THE ARTIST\n\nLan Tuazon (b. 1
976\, Philippines) lives and works in Chicago where she is an Assistant Pr
ofessor of Sculpture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Tuazon

he order of things: architecture\, artifacts\, and now\, anthropogenic mat
Through the artificial fossilization of objects\, natur
al processes are imposed onto manmade products to make visible the effects
of geological time and the finitude of human culture.\n\nThis exhibition

is exhibition is the final part of Lan Tuazon’s decade-long trilogy on t

Through the artificial fossilization of objects\, natur
al processes are imposed onto manmade products to make visible the effects

is exhibition is the final part of Lan Tuazon’s decade-long trilogy on t

concile exclusions.
Through the artificial fossilization of objects\, natur
al processes are imposed onto manmade products to make visible the effects

 llery Artist-in-Residence\n\nSeptember 21 – December 7\, 2018\n\n \n\nTh
is exhibition is the final part of Lan Tuazon’s decade-long trilogy on t
he order of things: architecture\, artifacts\, and now\, anthropogenic mat

Through the artificial fossilization of objects\, natur
al processes are imposed onto manmade products to make visible the effects
of geological time and the finitude of human culture.\n\nThis exhibition
is organized by Amy Hauft\, 2017-2018 Acting Director of the Visual Arts C
 enter.\n\n \n\nASSOCIATED PROGRAMS\n\nFall 2018 Season Opening Reception /

is exhibition is the final part of Lan Tuazon’s decade-long trilogy on t
he order of things: architecture\, artifacts\, and now\, anthropogenic mat
