Green Materials Lab: Workshop with Compressed Earth Blocks

On Thursday, March 28th, the Materials Lab will host two Compressed Earth Block (CEB) workshops, led by Jim Hallock of Colorado Earth.

Session 1: 11:00am - 12:30pm | Materials Lab | WMB 3.102
Session 2: 3:30 - 5:00pm | Goldsmith Lecture Hall | GOL 3.120

Each session will include a talk by Jim Hallock on the projects he has built worldwide, followed by a hands-on demonstration that will include use of a CEB machine (the Impact 2001A Series, manufactured by Advanced Earthen Construction Technologies in San Antonio).

Compressed Earth Blocks are unfired earth masonry units made from inorganic subsoil, clay, and aggregate, formed into blocks through compression with a mechanical press and joined with standard bricklaying techniques. Stabilizers such as cement or lime are sometimes added to increase strength and water resistance. Workshop participants will learn how to select a proper soil mix, fabricate a block using the machinery, and build a simple arch.
