Health & Humanities Research Seminar: Scott Graham on "The Opioid Epidemic and the Pursuit of Moral Medicine"

The second health humanities seminar in the spring 2021 series will be led by Scott Graham, PhD. Dr. Graham’s presentation, “The Opioid Epidemic and the Pursuit of Moral Medicine,” draws from a longitudinal computational humanities analysis of biomedical writing on opioids between 1959 and 2019. Based on this research, he will argue that popular media accounts of the opioid epidemic incorrectly accuse pain management physicians of being unconcerned about the risks of dependence and that medical opioid debates often serve as proxy arguments about changing ethical norms regarding physicians’ duties to individual patients vs. public health. Dr. Graham will speak for about 30 minutes, followed by an equal amount of time for Q&A and group discussion.
