Dick Stegewerns (1966) was trained at the Department of Japanese Language and Culture at Leiden University and the Department of Contemporary History at Kyoto University. He finished the PhD program at the latter university and recieved his degree at his Dutch alma mater. In total he has spent fifteen years in Japan, conducting research and being employed at Kyoto University and Osaka Sangyō University. In 2007 he relocated to Europe, where he teaches courses on modern and contemporary Japanese history, international relations, politics, society, culture, and film at the University of Oslo.

His research projects concerning Japan have ranged from prewar views of the outside world, democracy, nationalism and internationalism, pan-Asianism, visualisation of history to new wave cinema. At present he conducts a project on postwar Japanese war films. He has published extensively both in English and Japanese, his main publications beingNationalism and Internationalism in Imperial Japan (2003), Adjusting to the New World – Japanese Opinion Leaders of the Taishō Generation and the Outside World (2007) and Yoshida Kijū – 50 Years of Avant-Garde Filmmaking in Postwar Japan(2010). He has also been very active in organising conferences, and introducing some of his strongest interests in Japan to Europe, in the form of film retrospectives, concert tours, and pure sake tastings.
