DESCRIPTION:Join us for a  talk by Dr. Dick Stegewerns\, University of Oslo
 .\n\nDick Stegewerns (1966) was trained at the Department of Japanese Lang
 uage and Culture at Leiden University and the Department of Contemporary H
 istory at Kyoto University. He finished the PhD program at the latter univ
 ersity and recieved his degree at his Dutch alma mater. In total he has sp
 ent fifteen years in Japan\, conducting research and being employed at Kyo
 to University and Osaka Sangyō University. In 2007 he relocated to Europe
 \, where he teaches courses on modern and contemporary Japanese history\, 
 international relations\, politics\, society\, culture\, and film at the U
 niversity of Oslo.\n\nHis research projects concerning Japan have ranged f
 rom prewar views of the outside world\, democracy\, nationalism and intern
 ationalism\, pan-Asianism\, visualisation of history to new wave cinema. A
 t present he conducts a project on postwar Japanese war films. He has publ
 ished extensively both in English and Japanese\, his main publications bei
 ngNationalism and Internationalism in Imperial Japan (2003)\, Adjusting to
  the New World – Japanese Opinion Leaders of the Taishō Generation and 
 the Outside World (2007) and Yoshida Kijū – 50 Years of Avant-Garde Fil
 mmaking in Postwar Japan(2010). He has also been very active in organising
  conferences\, and introducing some of his strongest interests in Japan to
  Europe\, in the form of film retrospectives\, concert tours\, and pure sa
 ke tastings.
