The Stark Center welcomes you to a new art exhibit featuring the paintings of Igor Galanin.
Igor Galanin was already an established artist in the Soviet Union when he, his wife, and two children immigrated to America in 1972. Galanin’s arrival in America coincided with the passage of Title IX, the federal law that created an athletic revolution as women’s teams were added to schools across the United States; women’s divisions emerged in heretofore all male sports such as wrestling, weightlifting and bodybuilding; and gyms and health clubs also opened their doors to women. Inspired by this new world of strong, skillful women, Galanin began painting women athletes, then a highly unusual subject for the world of art. Even more unusual is that Galanin chose to include strongwomen in his collection of female athletes.
