About this Event
UT alum and Ethnolab fellow Jacinto Cuvi will present his book The Edge of the Law: Street Vendors and the Erosion of Citizenship in Sao Paulo (Chicago 2025). The book is about the losing of rights and personhood. It focuses on the experience of street vendors in Sao Paulo—a massive and unwelcome constituency in the wealthiest city of the southern hemisphere. Jacinto got his PhD in sociology at UT in 2017. He is now associate professor of sociology and development studies at the Université libre de Bruxelles in Brussels, Belgium. After over a decade studying the politics of informal labor, he is starting a new project on the informalization of politics. This a hybrid event, co-sponsored by the UT Urban Ethnography Lab and the Power & Society working group.
