Literacy First Tutors work full-time in an elementary school teaching young children to read. Literacy First places highly trained AmeriCorps members in low-income elementary schools in Austin to ensure K-2nd grade students advance to grade level in reading before third grade. 75% of students in our program either fully reach or make measurable profess in reading at grade level helping close the opportunity gap in Austin.
This is a great opportunity to:
- Be a part of a national AmeriCorps movement toward social justice
- Gain literacy tutoring experience in a low-income school
- Receive ongoing training and support from a Literacy First literacy coach
- Acquire professional development applicable to any career
- Gain leadership skills
- Option to pursue alternative teaching certification through Literacy First's partnership with Region 13 Education Service Center
- Option to tutor in Spanish and advance your language skills
- Network with other non-profit organizations in Austin through after-school partnerships
What's involved?
- Commit to serve as a Literacy First Tutor from September through June
- Provide daily 1-on-1 tutoroing to 10 K-2nd grade students
- Tutor using a research-based curriculum
- Participate in community service projects with local non-profits
