Please join us for a special lunchtime lecture with Dr. Broderick Chow of Brunel University London, based on his paper Becoming an Image: The Practiced Life of Stanley Rothwell.
Stanley Hallam Rothwell (1904-1986) was a British former miner, painter, pub bouncer, writer, wrestler, bodybuilder, physical education instructor, and artist model, whose body is captured in many of London’s most famous sculptures, including C. Sargeant Jagger’s Royal Artillery Memorial at Hyde Park. Dr. Chow will explore Rothwell’s archive of photos from the Stark Center's collection as a kind of performance documentation, capturing moments of heightened self-presentation in the “dialectic of the pose”, the space between the image itself and the dynamic, muscular process of its creation.
Broderick Chow is Senior Lecturer in Theatre at Brunel University London. His work spans theatre and performance studies, history, anthropology, and sociology, and aims at an embodied understanding of the history of physical culture and fitness practices including bodybuilding, weightlifting, and wrestling, and the production of 20th and 21st century masculinities.
