Re-imagining a New Bipartisan Disability Policy Agenda

Working together at the Federal level: Moving from protecting what we have to reimagining a new bipartisan disability policy agenda

Andy Imparato, JD

Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD)

About the Talk: Legislation and policy impacts people with disabilities including disability specific legislation such as the Americans with Disabilities Act, or legislation that is universal such as the Affordable Care Act. Andy Imparato, executive director of the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD), will discuss past and present legislation, and looking ahead to the future to advance the needs of people with disabilities.  He will share his experiences in working with policymakers using a bipartisan approach, and will describe what the AUCD network is and what AUCD is doing on the policy front.

About the Speaker: Andy Imparato has served as executive director of AUCD since 2013 and a 25-year DC veteran who served as disability policy director for the US Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.  As a disability rights lawyer and policy professional with more than 25 years of experience in government and advocacy roles, Imparato has worked with bipartisan policymakers to advance disability policy at the national level in the areas of civil rights, workforce development, and disability benefits. Prior to coming to AUCD, he was senior counsel and disability policy director for Chairman Tom Harkin on the US Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. Before that, he spent 11 years as President and CEO of the American Association of People with Disabilities, a national organization working to grow the political and economic power of the disability community. Imparato’s personal experience with bipolar disorder informs his perspective. AUCD is a national network of more than 100 university-based programs that engage in research, training and advocacy to improve the lives of children and adults with disabilities. The Texas Center for Disability Studies is one of these centers. Imparato has helped the organization nearly triple its budget, broaden the scope of its advocacy and expand its leadership capacity.
