Dr. Pat Carter has been a member of the UT Austin School of Nursing faculty since 1999. Her clinical background is in chronic illness management and sleep medicine. Through her work with patients and their family caregivers she has identified that a major predictor to health and wellbeing is an individual’s sleep quality. This has led to a productive research and service career over the past 19 years that has focused on promoting quality sleep across vulnerable populations and evaluating the effects poor sleep has on physical, psychological, and emotional outcomes. She has expertise in measuring sleep quality both using both subjective and objective measures and in the use of behavioral sleep medicine techniques (e.g. cognitive behavioral therapies) to promote sleep quality Dr. Carter has been interviewed and provided lectures to local, national, and international audiences to help people to understand the far reaching impact sleep has on their overall health and success in life.
In this talk we will explore the science as it relates to what we know/suspect is true about sleep and roles that sleep plays in learning and memory. Finally, we will learn to apply information about sleep improvement to our own lives to strengthen the sleep-wake (circadian) rhythm of our lives. Sleep is health and health is success.
