The Role of Media in Politics

A Feminist Collective Care@CWGS Event

Media coverage shapes how Americans perceive the world and what they consider to be important. In the American political system, the media perform a number of functions important to the democratic process. The media reports the news, serves as an intermediary between the government and the people, helps determine which issues should be discussed, and keeps people actively involved in society and politics.

Panelists include:

Jehmu Greene is an evangelist for social good, an award-winning media and advocacy strategist, proud Texan and recent candidate for Chair of the Democratic National Committee. Heading into her eighth year as a Fox News Political Analyst, Jehmu unapologetically defends progressive values and policies on the network. She co-founded Define American with Jose Antonio Vargas, an initiative that uses media and culture to elevate the immigration reform conversation and is a founding board member of VoteRunLead. She previously served as president of WakaWaka, a global social enterprise working to bring solar power to people living without access to electricity; president of Rock the Vote, where under her leadership membership grew from 1,500 to over 1 million and young voter turnout had the highest increase ever recorded in between two presidential elections; president of the Women’s Media Center where she designed the Name It, Change It campaign to fight sexism against women candidates and trained progressive women to amplify their voices in the media; director of women’s outreach and Southern political director at the Democratic National Committee; National Director of Project Vote and Executive Director of Texas Young Democrats. She has worked on over twenty political campaigns at the local, state and national level and served as an advisor and national surrogate for Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign. Jehmu was appointed by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to the United States National Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). She splits her time between New York City, Austin.

She received her MA in Communication Studies from the University of Denver.  She currently works with the Moody Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as a graduate research assistant. Her research focuses on the intersections of black geography, the afterlife of slavery, time and space and performances of Black female subjectivities through the visual and cultural modalities of media. Her work has been published in Media Industries and Flow. Recently, she was awarded the Graduate Student Writing Prize on behalf of Society for Cinema and Media Studies Black Caucus for her project “Black Feminist Futures: Technologies of Race, Gender, and Sexuality in Janelle Monáe’s Dirty Computer.”

She serves on the City of Austin's Human Rights Commission, the Community Advisory Board for Texas Health Action (Kind Clinic) and the Health Equity Policy Council for Central Health—a taxing entity that provides healthcare to low income Central Texans. Alicia has contributed to municipal and statewide legislation to reduce sexual assault and human trafficking, mandate paid sick leave and abortion funding, decriminalize and alleviate homelessness, and target other social determinants of health. She currently manages press relations for Julie Oliver's campaign for US Congress in TX-25 and advocates for the rights of intersex people like her, for which she was awarded the Ceci Gratias Guardian Award by the Austin LGBT Chamber of Commerce in 2019.
