The Fellowships are being offered in two areas of concentration, Sales and Marketing and Editorial.
Eligibility and Requirements:
The University of Texas Press Publishing Fellowships are open only to alumni of the University of Texas at Austin (as of September 2016). Applicants must have a strong desire to pursue a career in publishing.
The Training:
The training will focus on either the Sales and Marketing or the Editorial Production side of publishing.
The Sales and Marketing Fellowship will be shared between two departments and will give the Fellow an understanding of how both departments fit into the overall publishing process. Under the supervision of the Sales Director, the Sales and Marketing Fellow will learn how to pitch and sell a list of books to an independent bookstore; become acquainted with sales tools such as Edelweiss; and work on special projects.
Under the supervision of the Marketing and Communications Manager, the Sales and Marketing Fellow will research media outlets with the publicity team; develop review lists and send out review copies of books; assist with marketing flyers and other collateral by drawing on some previous design experience; research and develop marketing plans for books using non-traditional marketing strategies; and assist with seasonal marketing correspondence with authors and other administrative tasks as needed.
Under the supervision of the Managing Editor, the Editorial Fellow will focus on manuscript preparation, file clean-up and coding, editing, proofreading, indexing, and project management in collaboration with Press staff.
Finalists for the Editorial Fellowship will be asked to take a copyediting test. Applicants are advised to read The Subversive Copy Editor by Carol Fisher Saller and should be familiar with The Chicago Manual of Style, 16th edition.
The Fellows will work primarily with their department managers, but throughout the year they will be exposed to all departments of the Press. Note that Fellows are not enrolled in academic courses and will not receive academic credit.
