After her debut feature, La Pointe Courte (1954) caught the eye of André Bazin and François Truffaut, director Agnes Varda was elevated to an influence and pioneer of the French New Wave. Her next narrative feature, made seven years later, Cléo from 5 to 7 (1961), is a departure from Varda’s documentarian impulses and features a more personalized, experimental form. Both a story about a singer facing her mortality and her place in the world as a woman, Cléo from 5 to 7 is the essential feminist film.
