Without Borders: Self Help Graphics and the State of Latinx Art

A special conversation in conjunction with our exhibition Arte Sin Fronteras: Prints from the Self Help Graphics StudioOur speakers will be Tomás Ybarra-Frausto, Dr. Gilberto Cárdenas, and Amelia Malagamba. This event will take place in our auditorium.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Gilberto Cárdenas has combined his passion for sociology and Latinx art in his research and projects on Mexican immigration, race and Latinx art in his research and projects on Mexican immigration, race and ethnic relations, economy and society, and visual sociology. An avid collector since his high school days, Dr. Cárdenas holds the largest private collection of U.S. Latinx art in the world with over 6,000 paintings, works on paper, sculptures and installations. In the last decade, he and his wife have made significant gifts to museums. The National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago inaugurated the Galeria Gilberto & Dolores Cárdenas in recognition of their gift of over 2,200 artworks in 2016. In addition, Dr. Cárdenas presented 428 artworks to the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas at Austin, and to the Snite Museum of the University of Notre Dame and other national and international institutions and organizations. Click to read more.

Tomás Ybarra-Frausto is an independent scholar of Chicanx and Latinx arts and culture. He was formerly the Associate Director of Creativity and Culture at the Rockefeller Foundation. Prior to joining the Rockefeller Foundation, Dr. Ybarra-Frausto was a tenured professor at Stanford University in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. In 2007, the Mexican government bestowed “The Order of The Aztec Eagle” on Dr. Ybarra-Frausto citing his life work in fostering cultural understanding between the United States and Mexico through the arts and humanities. Click to read more.

Amelia Malagamba works as an independent scholar of Chicanx and Latinx art. She has taught at The University of Texas at San Antonio and Arizona State University. She has edited Encuentros. Los Festivales Internacionales de la Raza (1988) and co-edited Mujer y literatura mexicana y chicana: Culturas en contacto (1988, 1990). She collaborated with Gilberto Cárdenas on Caras vemos, corazones no sabemos, on an exhibition at the Snite Museum of Art, University of Notre Dame.

Thursdays are free admission to the museum. The Blanton is located at the intersection of Congress Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Paid parking is available in the Brazos Garage on Brazos Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Parking is $4; bring your ticket with you to the museum for the discounted rate.
