Workshop: “Getting To 'No:' Spanish Imperial Policies Concerning Sexuality And Illegitimacy, 1475-1800” by Ann Twinam, University of Texas at Austin

This paper will compare what negative decisions by the Council of Casti Le and The Council of the Indies reveals about imperial policies concerning sexuality and illegitimacy. 

Ann Twinam is professor of history and holds the Walter Prescott Webb Chair in History, at the University of Texas at Austin. She received her Ph.D. from Yale University in 1976. Her recent monograph, Purchasing Whiteness: Pardos, Pulattos and the Quest for Social Mobility in the Spanish Indies (Stanford University Press, 2015) received LASA's Bryce Wood Book award, the Conference on Latin American History's Bolton-Johnson prize, American Historical Association's Beveridge prize and RMCLAS' Bandalier-Lavrin prize. This long term project builds on a previous publication public lives, private secrets to explore spanish imperial policy and practices concerning sexuality and illegitimacy 1475-1800.
