The Color Inside is a Skyspace by artist James Turrell, located on the rooftop of the Student Activity Center. The Skyspace is free and open to all visitors, and is part of the collection of Landmarks, the public art program of The University of Texas at Austin. The Skyspace is a naked-eye observatory in the heart of the main campus, where visitors can view the sky through an opening in the ceiling called an oculus. During sunrise and sunset, colored lights illuminate the walls of the Skyspace during light sequences that last about an hour, and contrast the natural skylight in the oculus. This affects the way we see the sky produces the experience of Turrell's art. The Skyspace can be experienced and enjoyed at any time of day, but sunrise and sunset are the most dramatic times. To visit the Skyspace for a sunset light sequence, make a free reservation. Please note that hours of operation shift with the Student Activity Center building schedule and vary throughout the year.
