Opened in 2010, the Visual Arts Center (VAC) in the Department of Art and Art History inhabits the space in the Art Building formerly occupied by the Blanton Museum of Art and provides pivotal research and exhibition space through five distinct galleries. Designed by award-winning firmLake|Flato Architects, the VAC promotes contemporary art through an annual rotation of exhibitions and public programs. Its artist-in-residence program invites emerging national and international artists to create new, site-specific work in the VAC's 1875-square-feet Vaulted Gallery during a 3-5 week residency that involves engagement with students during all stages of the project. Also benefitting students is Center Space Project, the VAC's student organization that oversees all aspects of exhibitions, from curating to installing, held in Center Space, the VAC's gallery that focuses on work by students from across campus.
